Limerick Urban Beekeeping

Thanks to on-going support from the Limerick City Gallery of Art and Learning Hub Limerick, Softday, and LUBS have now recruited new urban beekeepers for 2015. The new volunteers joined LUBS and have been trained and equipped as urban beekeepers, establishing beehives in their local communities.

In March 2015 LUBS established a fourth phase of the Limerick Urban Beekeeping Society project. LUBS trained and equipped thirteen new urban beekeepers, and assisted these new beekeepers in establishing viable apiaries in local communities and city centre locations, in Limerick City.

Members

Currently most LUBS members are also members of the County Limerick Beekeepers' Association who are affiliated to The Federation of Irish Beekeepers Associations. This is important for insurances purposes when LUBS members manage public aperies.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of LUBS is to become a member-owned and operated urban beekeeping enterprise. As members, we contribute our labour: working together builds trust through cooperation and teamwork and enables us to promote urban beekeeping in Limerick city within the context of our values and principles. Only members of LUBS may be beekeepers, within the scope of LUBS, and purchase our honey products, and we will share responsibilities and benefits equally. We strive for responsible and ethical membership. We are resource training and buying agent for our members and not a selling agent for any industry. We support and aim to be a part of the cooperative movement. We strive to promote awareness about urban beekeeping and bee related products. We seek to avoid products that depend on the exploitation of others. We support non-toxic, sustainable apiary management and disease control.

We respect the environment. We strive to reduce the impact of our lifestyles on the world we share with other species and future generations. We support and prefer to buy from local, earth-friendly bee product suppliers. We recycle. We try to lead by example, educating others and ourselves about urban honeybees, bee disease control, cooperation and the environment. We are committed to diversity and equality. We will oppose discrimination in any form. We strive to make the LUBS Coop welcoming and accessible to all who share and respect our interest in urban beekeeping and to respect the opinions, needs and concerns of every member. We seek to maximise participation.
